Applying updates to self-managed laptops
Apologies for the broad announcement on this, but it’s important to reach everyone in the divisions managed by CELS Systems. This message is targeted specifically toward people who manage their own laptops. If we handle the updates on your machines, you’re fine.
I’ve received word from Cyber indicating there are a few machines not current with their patch levels based on outbound traffic from ANL wireless networks. Bearing this in mind (and given there’s a current vulnerability with macOS High Sierra 10.13), I want to remind everyone part of the deal with having a self-managed machine is keeping it up to date.
Please take a moment to ensure your laptop (whether it’s Windows, macOS, or some flavor of Linux) is not running with unpatched vulnerabilities. If you need help applying updates, let us know and we’ll help you.
I also encourage you to subscribe to a couple of discussion lists helpful for people who manage their own laptops. For historic reasons, they’re hosted in the mcs.anl.gov domain, but anyone in CELS is welcome to join. They’re low traffic mailing lists where people ask questions and share tips and other helpful information.
Mac users: [email protected] – sign up by sending an email to [email protected].
Linux users: [email protected] – sign up by sending an email to [email protected].
We don’t really have a Windows users group – but I’ll happily create one if there’s interest.
Thanks!
