Computing outage, October 19
Due to the construction in the data center linking the expansion into the rest of the building, the power to the room will be interrupted for most of the day on Monday, October 19. The exact timing of what will be turned off when is being worked out and we will send another announcement once the window is set, but the data center will be without power beginning at 7AM and remain in that state until late afternoon/early evening. Some services will go down in the evening/night of the 18th. We will announce these next week.
All computing equipment housed in the data center will be without power, as the work is affecting the Emergency Power Off (EPO) system that manages all power (commercial and UPS) to the room.
For CELS Computing, this will affect the various computing clusters in the room (you should get a separate communication on those), as well as all file servers for the MCS Legacy computing environment and the CELS General Compute Environment (GCE). As such, all workstations and login nodes will be down. Account management for both (accounts.mcs.anl.gov, accounts.cels.anl.gov) will also be offline.
BIO divisional users, your Y drive and Z drive will be down during this period.
Web services hosted and provided by CELS Systems (WordPress, Confluence, Jira, Gitlab, svn, repocafe), mailing lists, and divisional websites will remain up and online, though some aspects that rely on components in building 240 may be unresponsive. This does not affect general email services, nor any other services provided by BIS. This also will not affect wireless networking in the building, though wired networking on legacy networks will be down.
If power is restored sooner than the expected window, we will bring things back online and send announcements accordingly, but we can’t count on it being back prior to 5PM.
We know this is not convenient, but it is unfortunately out of our control. Thanks for your understanding, and stand by for more info.
