Upgrading to Mountain Lion

If you are using an Argonne-owned Mac laptop in MCS, CELS, LCF, CI, or IGSB and would like to be part of the lab’s Mountain Lion purchase (for installing now or later), please send a note to [email protected] indicating whether you want the client or server version.  (Most users want the client version).

If your mac is managed by the MCS Systems Group (administrative machines, for example), we will count you already.

We need these numbers by end of week, Friday, August 3.

If your computer is more than 3 years old, it will not likely support Mountain Lion.  If in doubt, ask us.  Also, any new machine purchased since June 11 is eligible for a free upgrade (or will come with it preinstalled), so you will not need to purchase an additional license.  You can check availability at http://www.apple.com/osx/uptodate/.

The cost per license is $9.99, and will be charged to your division.  The installation images will be disbursed as soon as we receive them.

If you want to know if your machine will run Mountain Lion, and you’re running Lion, hit the Apple logo in the top left and open up about this Mac. From there click on more info and you should see a page open which lists your Mac’s details. At the top, below the Mac’s name, is the model number and the date it was released. Check that name against the list below and bingo, you should know whether your Mac will run Mountain Lion.

If your’e running Snow Leopard or older, visit https://selfsolve.apple.com/agreementWarrantyDynamic.do and enter your machine’s serial number.

The following models will run Mountain Lion.

• iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
• MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
• MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
• MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
• Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
• Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)
• Xserve (Early 2009)

 

You can upgrade directly from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion, you do not need to go to Lion first.

If you think you’re ever going to want to run Mountain Lion on your machine, then request the upgrade.  You don’t have to install it right away (see below), but if you miss this window to purchase the OS through the lab, then when you decide you do want it, you will have to buy it yourself and not get reimbursed.

We are collecting counts for purchase, we will add some extras, and we will send the numbers on Monday.  When we receive the software, we will let those who requested it know.  We do *not* recommend installing the software at this time.  It’s very new, it has issues, and we’re not supporting it officially.  If you enjoy doing things like printing, this is not the OS for you to install just yet.  We’ll buy it, give it to you, and you should await further instructions on when we think it’s okay to install it.  If you bought a new machine that came with Mountain Lion, we’ll do our best, but it’s still too new to say that everything is working.

Anyone with UofC owned machines should purchase their upgrades through UofC, who can buy individual copies directly.
