Update: GCE is back online

March 29, 2022 by Stacey, Craig

Today’s work on GCE is complete. The environment will stay up through the weekend, however, the compute nodes based in 240 will be unavailable until Monday. Next, at 5PM we will take everything in the data center, including the Legacy MCS computing environment, offline. Thanks, all!

Legacy and GCE outages this weekend, starting at 8:30AM Friday, November 19.

March 29, 2022 by Stacey, Craig

Hi, everyone. Here’s a link to previous announcement: virtualhelpdesk.cels.anl.gov/2021/11/12/upcoming-service-outages-november-19-through-nov-22/ As a summary of the activities, here’s what you can expect tomorrow: 8:30AM: Most GCE resources will go offline. GCE login nodes will remain operational as a pass-through to Legacy or other systems. During this outage window, we will be powering down, removing, and moving the …

Upcoming service outages, November 19 through Nov 22.

March 29, 2022 by Stacey, Craig

Hi, everyone.
I mentioned this in the last note, but want to make sure we’re clear on what’s going to be up and running vs. what’s not next weekend. I’ll try to keep it succinct.

As Building 240 occupants are aware, the building will lose power on Saturday, November 20. This includes the data center. There’s a bunch of work we’re scheduling to coincide with this and take advantage of the forced outage. Please note, this notice serves to provide outage info specifically for general CELS services in both the General Computing Environment (GCE) and the Legacy MCS network. Announcements related to LCRC, ALCF, and other systems in the room will be handled by their respective support teams, and those timelines may differ from what I mention below.

CELS Systems Newsletter, October 2021 (Part 2: Services and Updates)

March 29, 2022 by Stacey, Craig

Hi, everyone. Sorry I’m a little late with this update. There’s a fair amount in here so I want to start with a very high level summary so you can decide how much you want to read.

  1. There will be a building-wide power outage that affects our data center in building 240 during the weekend of November 19-21. The current plan has all equipment in the data center being shut down at end of day on Friday, November 19th, and brought back online the morning of Monday, November 22nd.
  2. New services: We have a Jenkins server in GCE, configured to run workflows on GCE compute resources. Also, we have a Globus Endpoint in GCE for transferring data into or out of GCE home directories and project directories.
  3. Legacy compute resources will be retired or migrated into GCE by the end of this calendar year. By January, Legacy Linux shell access will be limited to the Legacy login nodes for the purposes of copying files into GCE. If you haven’t moved your workflows into GCE, it’s time to start.
