March 29, 2022 by Stacey, Craig

Hi, folks! I’m including the very official welcome message from BIS on this below, but I wanted to be the first to fill you in on what’s happening. BIS will be working with you all to migrate your mailbox from on-premise Exchange service (running Exchange 2010) to Microsoft-hosted Office 365. I’ve been on this setup …

File Server online

March 29, 2022 by Stacey, Craig

Greetings, and good morning. The file server is online and fully operational. The server experienced a major hardware system failure. We managed in the end to salvage a mother board from a decommissioned server that was in the excess pile, a server’s death row. A last minute reprieve from the guvnuh, as it were. This …

BIO File Server downtime this afternoon (Y and Z Drive)

March 29, 2022 by Stacey, Craig

To apply important security patches to the file server, we’ll need to do a reboot of the services today. These are scheduled to begin at 5PM and will take approximately two hours. I’m hoping it will be shorter than that, but these can sometimes take a few reboots to get every patch available. During this …

March 29, 2022 by Stacey, Craig

As you’re no doubt aware, a malware worm has been infecting Windows machines around the internet. If you run your own Windows machine (even if it’s a VM), you really need to ensure it’s current on its patch level to prevent it from infecting and spreading. This link from Microsoft lays out the details, but …

March 29, 2022 by Stacey, Craig

Greetings, We must reboot the fileserver again tonight in order to configure it to produce better debugging information. We do not expect it to take very long, but I’m setting a 1 hour window so we can deal with anything unexpected. It will be shut down at 5 PM and should be back in service …

Update: xgitlab.cels.anl.gov

March 29, 2022 by Stacey, Craig

After our migration of xgitlab to the new system, the host VM experienced a crash and xgitlab.cels.anl.gov became unavailable. Service has been restored, and xgitlab.cels.anl.gov is operational and we are keeping an eye on it. If we experience further issues, a snapshot of data prior to the migration is available at xgitlab-old.cels.anl.gov. Any updates made …
