All Slack Authentication will require MFA effective October 20.
Hi, everyone!
Some changes are coming to how you authenticate to your Slack workspaces hosted by CELS. To retain our ability to use Slack, we must enforce multi-factor authentication for all users. This is going into effect beginning on October 20th for all workspaces at https://grid-cels-anl.enterprise.slack.com/.
Guest accounts already require 2 factor authentication, so nothing will change for guest users.
Argonne employees and collaborators have three options for signing in: Argonne SSO, CELS SSO, and ALCF SSO. On October 20th, “Argonne SSO” will be reconfigured to require a smart card to authenticate.
To login using Argonne SSO (Smart Card/HSPD-12): The process is very much the same as any other app that requires a smart card, such as Box Plus or Dash Plus. With your smart card/HSPD-12 card inserted into your card reader, enter your username in the single field and click the “Certificate Login” button underneath. Select your certificate from your smart card, choose “OK”, enter your PIN, and you’re logged in. You can test this out now by opening a private/incognito browser window, visiting https://grid-cels-anl.enterprise.slack.com/, choosing “Argonne SSO” and then choosing “Certificate Login” in the lower right side of the login window. On October 20, the other options “Default Login” and “Integrated Login” will be disabled and only Certificate Login will be an option.
To login using CELS SSO (Duo MFA): You must have a GCE account, and you must have Duo MFA set up. Instructions on obtaining a GCE account can be found here, and Duo MFA set up instructions are here. If you are already a JLSE user or LCRC user, then your Duo MFA is set up.
To login using ALCF SSO (MobilePass/Cryptocard): If you hold an ALCF account that’s authorized for Slack, you can also login using your ALCF login. This is provided in advance of ALCF workspaces that will migrate into this setup later this year.
Please note, the Argonne SSO option will only work with an HSPD-12 card or a smart card provided by the Argonne Service Desk. If you don’t have an HSPD-12 badge or smart card, you must use CELS SSO or ALCF SSO to login.
To login to a mobile device, the most reliable way is to sign in on desktop or web, click “Argonne National Laboratory” in the upper left, and choose “Sign in on Mobile“.
