compute-386-08.cels.anl.gov system upgrade

compute-386-08.cels.anl.gov aka compute-08.cels.anl.gov will be taken offline November 3rd and the disk will be wiped. If you have any files on this server (under /scratch), please make a backup copy before then. The files under /home and /nfs are network filesystems, so no data will be lost from those.

We’ll be using this server to test a new GPU Compute configuration using Ubuntu 24.04.

Currently our servers with GPUs are running an old OS version, Ubuntu 22.04. They also have numerous GUI applications installed (Firefox, Chrome, Gnome, Mplayer, etc) which we want to remove, since they cause security alarms and aren’t actually used by anyone on the command line-only servers. The new Ubuntu 24 install will have fewer packages, so we’ll need users to test the new server and let us know if there are any missing packages.

Another post will be made when the server is ready for testing by users.
