Retiring webvpn service

March 29, 2022 by Stacey, Craig

The web-based VPN service run by BIS (https://vpn.anl.gov) has reached end of life, and BIS (the former CIS) would like to retire it. Before they do, they want to be sure it’s not a critical part of your work that we can’t find another solution for.
First up, this is not getting rid of VPN access. This is retiring the very specific https://vpn.anl.gov service that allows you to browse websites from an Argonne address. If you currently have a VPN account, that is unaffected.
If you currently use the VPN via that address, the options are:
1) Using dash.anl.gov. The “Inside Argonne” app presents a web browser inside the ANL firewall that can be used to browse other websites/journals from an Argonne address.
2) The tips and tricks provided at https://wiki.cels.anl.gov/IT/index.php/Getting_by_without_a_VPN_client
3) Using the actual VPN client installed on your machine – if you have specific access requirements that are not met by the above.
BIS has not yet announced an end date, but I will keep you informed as I learn more.
In the meantime, if the above options don’t meet your needs, let me know and we’ll figure out how to make sure you can do your job.
