When you connect to slack, you automatically join the announcements channel, and probably #random which is a channel for social chatter. You may have other defaults depending on who invited you.
To join a channel, you can click the “Channels” header in the left sidebar. That brings up the channel browser, which will list every public channel, plus private channels you already belong to.
You can also join by typing /join channelname.
